The Position


The Senior Accountant is responsible for the accounting close and development of accounting policies and procedures for the Alternative Markets team.  This key role presents financial results to senior management, assists with the preparation of SEC/Regulatory filings, and performs technical research and analysis.


Job Responsibilities

  1. Prepares complex reconciliations and reviews reconciliations prepared by staff accountants as required.
  2. Responsible/Leads coordination of the accounting close and provides reports to management as required.
  3. Responsible for reinsurance reporting to internal/external parties.
  4. Responsible for the review of trial balances, income statements and balance sheets for all assigned companies.
  5. Provides reconciliations, account activity explanations, and other support as required for internal and external auditors.
  6. Prepares customer invoicing for advisory product line of business.
  7. Oversees the preparation of journal entries, posting transactions, and the production of month-end reports. Ensures that required entries are posted and maintains adherence to posting control processes.  
  8. Monitors adherence to Finance Policies, internal controls and GAAP. Prepares and provides financial data, statistical information and reporting to SEC reporting group and to external regulators.
  9. Provides cross-functional accounting functions with Alternative Markets product and accounting knowledge.
  10. Closely supports Alternative Markets Operations Vice President in serving as backup as needed.
  11. Manages all audits and inquiries from internal/external auditors and regulatory bodies.
  12. Supports set up and maintenance of accounting and reporting for new contracts including research of applicable GAAP and regulatory requirements to support the accounting treatment of transactions.
  13. Develops accounting policy and internal controls for all assigned companies in coordination with Arch accounting areas.
  14. Develops and maintains the Captive operating manuals.
  15. Responsible for all Board minutes and actions for the Captive.
  16. Reviews incoming internal intercompany allocations and prepares outgoing internal allocations.
  17. Prepares and presents to senior management as required annual budgets and allocations for all companies assigned.



Required Experience and Qualifications:

  1. Accounting experience in mortgage or financial services industry required. 
  2. In depth knowledge of accounting theory, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  3. Ability to understand and apply standard practices and procedures.
  4. Solid understanding of month-end close process, business plan preparation, annual budgeting, cash management services and account analysis/reconciliation.
  5. Advanced knowledge in adhering to regulatory compliance in the District of Columbia for Captives and the preparation of regulatory reporting.
  6. Knowledge of Captive formation/licensing as well as ongoing operational requirements in the District of Columbia.
  7. Advanced knowledge of ERP financial applications, such as PeopleSoft.
  8. Skilled in identifying and resolving moderately complex accounting issues.
  9. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills needed to respond to both internal/external auditors and regulatory inquiries and exams.
  10. Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to consistently meet deadlines.
  11. Strong analytical skills.


Required knowledge & skills would typically be acquired through a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and CPA (or requirements for certification met) plus 5-10 years of related experience.
