The AVP, Underwriting Operations manages all U.S. front line underwriting operations, including digital operations, loan registration, customer call center, and the delegated underwriting team. The incumbent is accountable for meeting quality, productivity, and cost objectives established by the senior management team.  The incumbent plans and allocates resources to meet demands and establishes operational objectives for department managers.

Develops strategies and plans to achieve quality, productivity, and cost goals. Ensures implementation and communication of plans and tactics. 


Partners with field sales to identify & analyze customer needs. Implements improvements in operations to ensure a smooth customer experience


Delivers on service level agreements for the individual groups and the operations team as a whole.


Collaborates with senior vice president in long range, strategic planning to meet company growth objectives.


Oversees department budget planning and monitoring. Reviews plan to actual budget variance analysis and implements strategies to address cost overages.


Relies on established relationships with stakeholders in IT & Underwriting to develop, monitor, and enhance operational processes and efficiencies. Ensures best practices are shared and implemented consistently across groups.


Develops methods for obtaining necessary operational metric data.   Prepares high level measurement reports and delivers presentations regarding operating results to senior management.


Responsible for the coaching & development of direct reports who manage teams of front-line leaders. Provides oversight for the ongoing management and retention of individual contributors.





Knowledge & Skills:


Broad and deep knowledge of the mortgage lending industry and underwriting practices and principals.


Familiarity with technologies utilized in the industry and the ability to see their impact on operational processes.


Experience in achieving service level agreement in a production process environment.


Extensive experience synthesizing qualitative and quantitative data to drive decisions for building efficient operational processes that provide for the ideal user experience.


Outstanding people management, team leadership ability.


Proven ability to establish credibility, influence and effective working relationships with key peers and stakeholders.


Experience making decisions in a fast-paced, deadline-driven and rapidly changing environment, achieving quality results in challenging conditions


Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills to effectively partner at the C-Suite and executive levels across the organization.


Education & Experience:


Required knowledge & skills would typically be acquired through a Bachelors Degree in business, management or insurance related field (or equivalent in experience) with 10 to 15 years or related experience. Significant management experience would typically be required.
