    The Position

    Strategic Analytics is a new, growing team at Arch. The team develops innovative predictive models and analytical tools to improve profitability and growth. Advanced analytics techniques play a key role in this mission. To be successful, we need to develop powerful models, tools and insights that give Arch a unique, competitive advantage.


    As Senior Data Scientist, you will play a crucial leadership role in developing the team’s analytics capability. You will work on high-profile advanced analytics projects that drive the company’s decision-making and strategy. You will work with other data scientists to build best-in-class predictive models with creativity, statistical rigor and business sense. As a key member of the Strategic Analytics team, you will help shape how Arch thinks about data and analytics.


    Job Responsibilities

    • Collaborate in cross-functional teams and share ideas to solve complex business problems
    • Build predictive models using advanced analytics techniques including GLM, text analytics, and machine learning
    • Develop powerful insights and tools using a variety of analytical techniques and technologies
    • Discover, explore and analyze internal and external datasets for the purpose of developing advanced analytics models
    • Assist in establishing best practices and repeatable processes for the Strategic Analytics team
    • Provide thought leadership on new, innovative techniques, approaches and software
    • Mentor, support and develop the growing team of predictive modelers and data scientists


    Desired Skills

    • Detailed understanding of statistical theory, predictive modeling, data mining and other advanced analytical techniques
    • Excellent verbal and written communications skills; ability to convey complex concepts to people across the organization
    • Ability to design, build and implement new modeling approaches
    • Exceptional teamwork skills required to play a key role in cross-functional teams as well as the ability to collaborate and build trusting relationships with business partners
    • Task management, time management, project management critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills
    • Comfortable handling ambiguous concepts and breaking down complex problems into manageable pieces

    Required Education/Experience 

    • Master’s Degree or PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering or similar quantitative fields; or significant experience in advanced data analytics
    • 5+ years’ experience in advanced analytics role
    • 2+ years in p&c insurance, preferably commercial lines
    • Excellent R and SQL skills required
    • Experience delivering significant business value from small or non-standard data sets
    • Hands-on experience developing generalized linear models in a commercial lines setting including loss ratio, frequency/severity, claims modeling
    • Familiarity with a variety of other advanced analytics techniques such as logistic regression, decision trees, clustering, text mining, random forests and survival analysis
    • Experience with Text Analytics Python as well as visualization tools such as QlikView, Tableauand Power BI are a plus
