  • Overview

    The Systems Engineer with a focus on Monitoring designs, implements, and reviews Monitoring solutions, and acts as a subject matter expert in their areas of expertise. The incumbent operates independently on assignments involving the setup and implementation of business transaction monitors, system health monitors, and application performance monitors to maximize benefit to the business and assist the Information Technology department in troubleshooting issues. The Systems Engineer establishes and cultivates successful relationships with our business units, technical implementation teams, management and vendors.

    Responsibilities

    1. Works with commercial Monitoring tools or writes custom scripts to monitor key IT systems, applications, and transactions.
    2. Performs technical analysis and recommends IT monitoring systems purchases and upgrades as needed.
    3. Identifies and recommends usage policies, best practices, and operational guidelines to gain the most benefit from the monitoring tools being used.
    4. Reviews existing monitors and identifies gaps and redundancies.
    5. Creates new and updates existing monitors to ensure systems and applications are sufficiently being monitored.
    6. Identifies and removes redundant and unnecessary monitors to ensure those being utilized are concise and complete.
    7. Writes documentation for monitors being implemented to provide an alert-based instruction set for production system turn-over to the Data Center Operations teams.
    8. Builds and upgrades monitoring systems per specifications to meet availability and performance targets per defined expectations with IT and business owners.

     

     

     

    Qualifications

    Knowledge & Skills:

    1. Strong working knowledge of AppDynamics, Solarwinds Orion, and CA Nimsoft UIM.
    2. Proficiency in one or more high-level scripting languages (PowerShell, Bash, Perl).
    3. Broad knowledge of Windows and UNIX/Linux operating systems and related back-office products.
    4. Good understanding of web technologies (Apache, Sharepoint), application server technologies (Jboss, WebSphere), database support (SQL Server, DB2, Oracle), and authentication/authorization services (Active Directory, ODSEE, IBM ISAM).
    5. Good understanding of TCP/IP networking and loadbalancing technologies (F5 BigIP, Citrix Netscaler).
    6. Excellent analytical skills, trouble-shooting and problem solving ability.
    7. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    8. Good interpersonal skills to effectively work with fellow staff and internal customers.
    9. Attention to detail.
    10. Customer service orientation and sense of urgency to maintain expected service levels.

    Education & Experience:

     

    Required knowledge & skills would typically be acquired through a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field plus 5+ years of related experience.
