    The Position

    We are seeking an analytical, motivated, and detail-oriented Underwriter to join our team. The Underwriter will assist in underwriting a book of treaty business in the US casualty reinsurance marketplace.  The position will target a range of products requiring the utilization of treaty pricing practices and negotiation skills.  In addition to having strong analytical skills and experience in Microsoft Excel, the ideal candidate will be eager to interact internally within a team setting, as well as engage with brokers and clients for marketing and underwriting audits.  The candidate should also be open to learning actuarial techniques, contract wording specifics, database analysis, and their application in evaluating deals. This position will report directly to the Managing Director of Casualty of Arch Reinsurance Company and will require 20%-30% travel.  


    Job Responsibilities

    • Assist underwriting team with basics of deal preparation and analysis
    • Manage renewal accounts and develop new business opportunities
    • Evaluate client financial objectives 
    • Perform in-depth statistical analyses
    • Assess and analyze specific reinsurance treaties (QS, XOL, aggregate) across multiple casualty product lines (GL, Auto, Umbrella, Excess, Environmental)
    • Negotiate contracts and assure profitability of business written
    • Perform underwriting audits of client files
    • Market to all levels of clients and brokers 
    • Develop and maintain client and broker relationships 
    • Report to the steering committee at underwriting meetings
    • Collaborate to develop and drive change within the group
    • Longer-term opportunity to work on various other lines of business

    Required Education/Experience 

    • Minimum of 4-10 years of experience in property and casualty insurance or reinsurance; preferred 3-5 year’s experience in primary GL, excess, package, construction, or commercial lines
    • College or university degree in a relevant major (e.g., math, sciences, economics, engineering, actuarial science, business)
    • Preferred prior experience as a primary insurance underwriter
    • CPCU® or ARe™ course of study a plus
