    Job Responsibilities

    The Position

    The Underwriting Manager of Arch Healthcare is responsible for the individual underwriting and servicing of Healthcare accounts within a defined territory. This position reports to the Regional Vice President - Healthcare.


    Job Responsibilities


    • Underwrites new and renewal business to achieve desired financial results within a designated underwriting territory
    • Stays up to date on relevant medical malpractice marketplace and legal changes.
    • Identifies potential exposures in relation to coverage being requested and individual risk characteristics
    • Adheres to current underwriting policy, practices, standards and procedures when negotiating on behalf of the Healthcare business unit
    • Prepares for and attends individual risk underwriting meetings with clients, prospects, and brokers
    • Travels as needed within a defined territory to develop and maintain beneficial broker relationships and to develop new business opportunities
    • Provides forecasts as needed for new and renewal business, along with regular reconciliations to such forecasts
    • Supports the training and development of underwriting colleagues
    • Represents Arch and Arch Healthcare professionally whether internally or externally at broker/agent offices and at industry event

    • Excellent oral and written communication skills with both internal and external constituents
    • Strong computer skills needed with proficiency in PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Word
    • Advance knowledge of Healthcare line of business and medical malpractice liability insurance principles with understanding of liability insurance contract.
    • Ability to effectively assess risk and make sound Underwriting decisions
    • Strong broker relationships
    • Superior skills in relationship building, active listening, needs analysis, and negotiation skills
    • Possess strong organizational skills to prioritize multi-tasking and time management

    Required Education/Experience 

    • The preferred candidate will possess a 4-year BA/BS degree, ideally with a major/concentration in Business, Economics or Management
    • The preferred candidate will have 5-10 years of underwriting experience handling primary medical malpractice and umbrella liability coverages for various types of healthcare facilities (hospitals, surgery centers, clinics, labs, home health care, etc.)
    • Consideration will also be given to candidates with comparable underwriting experience handling casualty and non-medical professional liability coverages
    • Strong relationships with medical malpractice brokers would be beneficial
    • CPCU, RPLU or other insurance course work recommended
