The Position

We are seeking an analytical, motivated, and detail-oriented Underwriter to join our team. The Underwriter will assist in underwriting a book of treaty business in the US property reinsurance marketplace.  The position will target a range of products requiring the utilization of treaty pricing practices and, over time, negotiation skills.  In addition to having strong analytical skills and some experience in Microsoft Excel, the ideal candidate will be eager to interact internally within a team setting, as well as engage with brokers and clients.  The candidate should also be open to learning actuarial and catastrophe modeling techniques and their application in evaluating deals. This position will report directly to the Managing Director of Property and Clash of Arch Reinsurance Company and will require 10-20% travel.  

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist underwriting team with basics of deal preparation and analysis
  • Evaluate client financial objectives
  • Perform in-depth statistical analyses
  • Assess and analyze specific reinsurance treaties (cat, aggregate, per risk and others)
  • Negotiate contracts and assure profitability of business written
  • Perform underwriting audits of client files
  • Develop and maintain client and broker relationships 
  • Market to all levels of clients and brokers 
  • Report to the steering committee at underwriting meetings
  • Collaborate to develop and drive change within the group
  • Long-term opportunity to work on workers compensation cat, clash, and/or aviation business

Required Skills/Experience

  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in property and casualty insurance or reinsurance
  • CPCU® or ARe™ course of study beneficial

  • College or university degree in a relevant major (e.g., math, economics, engineering, actuarial science, business) preferred
